Yangzhou is situated in a rich agricultural region on the Grand Canal near the Yangtze River, in eastern China. Leading products manufactured are processed food, textiles, machine tools, and traditional handicrafts. Yangzhou began its modern development, reversing a long period of stagnation, in the 1960s, stimulated by redevelopment of the Grand Canal as a major waterway.
