Cane Toads an unnatural history.
New York : First Run Features, 1987. This film is a study of the cane
toad, introduced into Australia in 1935 to control a beetle infestation
that was destroying the country's sugar cane fields. The cane toad ate
the beetles -- and everything else. With no natural predator to
withstand its poison, the 100 original cane toad settlers soon took over
the entire northern half of the vast continent of Australia. The film
observes the toad's odd and often hilarious behavior and habits.
Scientific commentary is balanced with fervently held opinions by local
farmers on what to do about the cute but destructive cane toad. ~ Rose
of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide Documents the history of the Cane
Toad in Australia. The cane toad - Bufo marinus - was imported to
Australia in 1935 in an attempt to rid the country of the greyback
beetle, which was devouring the sugarcane crop. Problem was, the beetle
could fly, and the cane toad couldn't. What the cane toad was unusually
proficient at, however, was making more cane toads. A humerous look at a
serious problem. |

The murder of Emmett Till.
Alexandria, VA : PBS, 2003. Narrator, Andre Braugher In August 1955,
a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago whistled at a white woman in a
grocery store in Money, Mississippi. Emmett Till didn't understand that
he had broken the unwritten laws of the Jim Crow South. Three days
later, two white men dragged him from his bed in the dead of night, beat
him brutally and shot him. Although his killers were arrested and
charged with murder, they were both quickly acquitted by an all-white,
all-male jury. Soon after, the defendants sold their story, including a
detailed account of how they murdered Till, to a journalist. The murder
and the trial horrified the nation and the world. Till's death was a
spark that helped mobilize the civil rights movement. Three months after
his body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River, the Montgomery Bus
Boycott began. 60 minutes. |

The discoverers. [San Diego, Ca?]
: MacGillivray Freeman Films : Distributed by Image Entertainment, 1999,
c1998. Directed by Greg MacGillivray and Steve Judson ; produced by
Greg MacGillivray ; written and visually conceived by Jon Boorstin ;
edited by Steve Judson ; music composed by Steve Wood. The Discoverers
features some astoundingly spectacular footage all centering around the
act of discovery. The story of the great navigator Magellan's search for
a passage to the Pacific is presented with film of spectacular sunsets
and scenery, and a visit to a re-creation of Sir Isaac Newton's
laboratory while he refracts light with lamps and prisms is equally
beautiful. The various vignettes, which range from a child and her
father discovering paintings of bison painted on cave ceilings thousands
of years ago to a scientist on a team analyzing data sent back from a
probe sent to the planet Venus, don't proceed in a linear path. But
that's the whole idea. The production was inspired by the Pulitzer
Prize-winning book The Discoverers by Daniel J. Boorstin, and the goal
was to put the viewer alongside those who explore the unknown as they
experience the joyous moments of discovery. |

the Axis and democratic philosophies, explains the Axis plan of world
conquest, and reviews events from 1933 to 1939 culminating in the

new order for Europe," by invading Austria & Czechoslovakia. The German
army marches against Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. The integrity of Poland
was now threatened & the people of the free world had reason to fear. On
Sept. 3, 1939, within twenty four hours after the Germans had crossed
